Lewes is known as the ‘The First Town in the First State’. It was founded by the Dutch in 1631 and incorporated in 1883. In 2006, Lewes was selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America’s “Dozen Distinctive Destinations,” and was named a “Preserve America Community" by former first lady Laura Bush. Its history is rich and is on display in the Zwaanendael Museum.
